Vienna Waits For You was my FAVORITE song for years — especially during college. I’ve always struggled with anxiety and a chronic feeling that I am not doing enough. I can work the most absurd hours to the point of obsession, but for some reason feel that it’s still not enough.
Always in a rush to move on to the next…to something bigger, better and brighter, yet somehow unable to arrive. Fighting to find my “Vienna”.
I guess now I am more of a “crazy adult” than a “crazy child”, as the song goes…but I think the message is such a good one, regardless of how many years you’ve been on this earth.
We need to slow down. Enjoy the present. Know when we’re being too hard on ourselves. And at times just look around and embrace life as it is. Love the experience.
Maybe that means taking a step back in order to move forward. Or learning to walk instead of run. Because if you don’t, you’ll one day see that you’ve actually just been running around in circles.
A beautiful song, with this beautiful city in the title, that symbolizes something even more incredible…
So, if you are anything like me, I say listen to Billy Joel and “cool it off before you burn it out”. In the grand scheme of things “you can afford to lose a day or two”, right? Personally coming to discover that if I cannot truly accept that last statement, I’ll likely wind up losing a whole lot more as a result.
